Below are the consolidated DMOZ submission title guidelines taken from DMOZ website.  These
title guidelines will help ensure websites submitting to DMOZ meets the directory's goals. The
followings are the compiled DMOZ Submission TITLE Guidelines.


What Title Should Consist:

  • As what it appears on the actual web site
  • Contain only the company's name or the title of the site
  • Begin with capital letter for each word
  • Use caps for a non-acronym


What Title Should NOT Consist:

  • Contain descriptive information about the site. Descriptive information goes in the
    description field.
  • Written as the URL. The URL goes in the URL field
  • Padded with a meaningless string of keywords. This is keyword Spam.
  • Use "&" or "and" in the title field UNLESS it appears this way on the site.
  • Use emphatic punctuation (the exclamation points).
  • Only use acronym as title. Include the full form of the name followed by the acronym in ( )

Bad Title:

Good Title:
Teknek - Web cleaning equipment for the coating, laminating, printing, and converting industries.


Example 2
Bad Title:
www.rescience.com - Manufacturer of distillation systems used to recycle and re-use solvents used
by the printing industry.

Good Title:
Recycling Sciences, Inc. - Manufacturer of distillation systems used to recycle and re-use solvents
used by the printing industry.


Example 3
Bad Title:
Why Grassfed is Best! - The advantages of natural grass feeding of farm animals. Health benefits,
news, and links to suppliers.

Good Title:
Eat Wild - The advantages of natural grass feeding of farm animals. Health benefits, news, and
links to suppliers.


Example 4
Bad Title:
Electric Vehicles-Aircraft, Hybrid, Fuel Cell, Hydrogen, Compressed Air, Solar, Renewables, Reduce
Air-Pollution, Increase Fuel Economy - Learn all about renewable energy, alternative fuel vehicles,
and sustainable living.

Good Title:
SunWater - Learn all about renewable energy, alternative fuel vehicles, and sustainable living.

Bad Title:
Employment discrimination against African, Hispanic, and Asian Americans - Understanding what

Good Title:
Employment Discrimination Against African, Hispanic, and Asian Americans - Understanding what

Bad Title:
Antique hardware and more - Sells reproduction antique hardware, restoration and refinishing
supplies.

Good Title:
Antique Hardware & More - Sells reproduction antique hardware, restoration and refinishing supplies.


Example 7
Bad Title:
Power to the Precocious! GEEKRIGHTS! - Geekrights is all about the discrimination and ignorance
regarding those who "just don't fit in". With a bent towards workers in technology industries, this
site attempts to expose those elements of discrimination of 'geeks' at any age.

Good Title:
GeekRights: Power to the Precocious - Covers the discrimination and ignorance regarding those
who "just don't fit in". With a bent towards workers in technology industries, this site attempts to
expose those elements of discrimination of 'geeks' at any age.

Note that "GeekRights" also appeared in the description. It was removed in the "Good" example.


Example 8
Bad Title:
FDIC - Information on deposit insurance, bank data, the banking system, consumer affairs, new
topics and associated official information. Provides insured bank deposits and ensures that
member banks meet required sound banking practices.

Good Title:
Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) - Information on deposit insurance, bank data, the
banking system, consumer affairs, new topics and associated official information. FDIC provides
insured bank deposits and ensures that member banks meet required sound banking practices.


Example 9
Bad Title:
Welcome to My Home - Simon Trpin, medical doctor, and his travels through Europe and Australia.

Good Title:
Simon Trpin - Medical doctor discusses presents his travels through Europe and Australia.

Note the change in description. Since the name was used in the title, it would be repetitive to include it in the
description.
